The Sciency Bit

http---www.pixteller.com-pdata-t-l-97152Let’s look at how your memory works. Think about the house you grew up in, or your favourite teacher at school or most beloved childhood pet?

As soon as you try to remember those things you create a visual image of them in your mind, because that’s the natural way your memory works. And it didn’t take any effort at all, right?

So if your memory recalls pieces of information as an image, it makes sense that when you want to put new information into your memory, it would be best if that was in a visual form too. Image in, image out.

This is what your memory does automatically, without you even thinking about it. For example, try and recall what you have done today or yesterday from the moment you woke up to now.

Even if you can’t get every detail, there are hundreds or even thousands of details that you will remember, simply because you saw it all happen in front of you.

Why can you remember hundreds of new pieces of information about your day without even thinking about it, but you struggle to memorise a Bible verse of twenty words even when you’re trying to concentrate really hard?

It’s because you’re not on the same wavelength as your memory, you’re speaking a different language.

Your memory doesn’t like repetition learning; it likes to see things!

You didn’t consciously try to memorize everything you did in the last day; your memory just soaked up the visual images…. and when you recalled what you did it was like watching a little movie in your mind.

How amazing is the human memory?!

When learning to memorise scripture we can use this to our advantage.

Memory experts have different techniques for doing this, but all of them are based on visualization and association.

If you want to remember something you need to picture it in your mind, but you also need to link it to something you already know or recall.

Trying to learn Bible verses by repeating them over and over is hard. There’s a much easier way.

When you learn how to work in the same way as your memory, you will be amazed at how easily and quickly your memory can lock onto new information.

So when memorising scripture, create a story a narrative a video unfolding in your head. This is the best way to memorise Bible scripture.

  3. Nice list. However, there are several glitches:

    54. John 11:20 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.
    This is 1st John 1:10.

    100. Habakkuk 3:19 The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of human beings who suppress the truth by their wickedness. The Lord God is my strength; he will make my feet like deer’s feet, and He will make me walk on my high hills.
First part is from Romans 1:18, not Habakkuk.

And several verses belong together, like Matthew 28:18-20 (Great Commission), instead of separated.

Some verses have a [] at the end.

Quite a few have the verse reference at the beginning and at the end.
    96. Psalm 46:1 “God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble. Psalm 46:1” []

  4. Hi again! I couldn’t help but to wander around in your site since I enjoy all things Christian. You know, thank you really, because it is soooo difficult to memorize scripture verses. The far I could go was to say the book and paraphrase what the Word of God said. I will try your advice and see how it goes. By the way, I would add into the list “‘I am the living bread which came down from heaven; if any one eats of this bread, he will live for ever; and the bread which I shall give for the life of the world is my flesh.’ The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, ‘How can this man give us his flesh to eat?’” (John 6:51–52) 😉
